If you want to improve your photographs in a professional manner but don't want to spend the bucks for Photoshop, PSE 8 goes a long way toward meeting your needs. It is a significant improvement over the previous Mac version, PSE6, with many new features. In contrast to other reports, I had absolutely no problems installing and running. I did need to download updates because neither Bridge nor PSE as delivered could deal with the newer Canon Raw format, but this was not difficult. The only drawback? is that the program is powerful and complex, and the on-line Help outline is pretty sketchy. Adobe does offer some video tutorials that are useful, but limited. There are several good manuals available. I found "The Photoshop Elements 8 book" by Kelby and Kloskowski to be a useful beginning, and the "Adobe Photoshop Elements 8" by Mark Galer is an excellent advanced book, with very good video tutorials. Of course the best way to learn is by doing, and the results from PSE 8 are so exciting, one does just that.

I had a few niggling problems with the last version of this software but those have been fixed for this version. As someone who is well able to use Photoshop, it is the Elements version which I use on a daily basis. I can keep Elements open all of the time to do the routine day to day imaging tasks. It is a lot faster and easier to use. Then for the big jobs, I can open Photoshop, which is huge systems drain, and use it on that big job. When I open Photoshop, I usually leave one browser open and close every other application. With Elements I have everything open.
I have discovered that Photoshop is well above the learning curve of non-artist and non-photographer types. It is overkill for these other users. They would use a lot more in the Elements program simply because it is easier to use but everyone tells them that the full Photoshop is the gold standard for image editing. I'm not saying that isn't true but I am saying that it is in every sense of the word a product for the professional. Elements is for everyone.
Number 1 on the things that were fixed in this version is the interface. Elements needed to let the user streamline the interface to the minimal when needed. It is so nice not to have all this extra onscreen stuff littering the screen. Also, the feature I use most often, layers, comes in the nicest tiny palette which springs open to a fuller size. It is the easiest to use that layers has ever been. I don't need to give up screen space to use this palette. It is also now much easier to switch out of Elements and onto your desktop or into other programs and then back into it again. This was a pain in the prior version. You can also now use the browser which is part of Elements right in Elements itself in a mini format. Photomerge has also greatly expanded in use and function. There are lots of other upgrades but the ability to minimize the interface coupled with the new layers palette made this worth the upgrade price as far as I am concerned.
How does Elements compare to the totally free GIMP? It is easier to use than GIMP, which is closer to Photoshop in difficulty of use. GIMP is very, very good but a lot of users will give up on it. How does Elements compare to Pixelmator? Pixelmator is a very promising piece of image editing software. In its present state it is about 4 stars and considerably cheaper than Elements. Now that Elements lets you minimize its interface, it comes closer to meeting Pixelmator's gorgeous screen interface. Pixelmator is not as full featured yet but it is improving with every upgrade. At roughly $50 less than Elements, it is software to keep your eye on for the future.

Photoshop Elements is a great photo editing program. For most users, the added components of Photoshop are not used. Photoshop Elements has all the necessary features needed for editing and at a great savings compared to Photoshop.

Beware! Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 (Mac) does not work for the PowerPC Mac. After I attempted to install the software without success, I called Adobe for help. It took three of their support Staff (I told each one that I was using the PowerPC Mac) and 25 minutes of my time for them to tell that the software doesn't work on my Mac. Anyone looking for a cheap never been used Elements 8 (Mac???)?

I purchased this program determined to improve my photo editing skills; previously had PSE 6.0. Purchase was made in May and it is now late August. I have spent a minimum of 20 hours trying various 'fixits' to get rid of an error message: "Licensing for this product has stopped." When I receive that message must restart the computer. I have had 'live chats' online, live phone conversations with agents I can barely understand and much advice on different levels of repair that are 'guaranteed' to solve the problem. It persists. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT UNLESS YOU ARE A SAVVY COMPUTER USER. You will be on your own to make it work. Adobe sends a list of about 7 solutions; try one, try them all, then repeat. That's their advice. I now find the internet is full of solutions to this exact problem. Why can't Adobe just fix it?
